Eventually, the eco-madness reached the tuning world, with multiple aftermarket developers now concentrating to offer vehicles with a high level of efficiency and decent performance, rather than the other way around. Coming to the Geneva Auto Show, we found an example that perfectly illustrates this, in the form of the AC Schnitzer 99d.

The project is based on a BMW Z4 320d Efficient Dynamics Edition and follows a classic recipe: more power and less weight, adding an emphasis on protecting the environment.

The Z4’s 2.0-liter four-cylinder diesel engine, which delivers 163 hp and 380 Nm when it leaves the factory, now produces 190 hp and 420 Nm of torque, offering the driver a reasonable output to play with.

However, the greatest changes have taken place in the weight loss department - the tuner has managed to cut a massive (are you ready for it?) 230 kg (507 lbs) off the car’s weight.

The result of the aforementioned modifications is that the Z4 can now hit 60 mph in 6.9 seconds and offer a top speed of 146 mph (235 km/h), while returning an impressive fuel efficiency of 3.8 liters per 100 km (61.9 US mpg) and only emitting 99.18 grams of CO2 per km.

The figures sound excellent, as you get the efficiency of a high-class subcompact with the performance of a sports car. Who wouldn't want that? However, before we end the story, we have to tell you that it all comes with a price. A BIG one. EUR149,000 ($206,000 at the current exchange rate) to be more precise.
