Tribute to the Gasser
Over the history of the automobile, there have been an untold number of fads and styles that have come and gone, but perhaps none are as intriguing as the Gasser. These jacked-up street rods were originally built for NHRA drag racing from the 1950s through the 1970s, and the Automobile Driving Museum in El Segundo, CA is setting up a special exhibit to honor these racers.
Opening on July 18 and running through August 10, the “Tribute to Gassers” exhibit will give visitors a close-up look at these unique machines distinguishable by their flashy paint and raised-up front ends. The paint jobs were just a fashion of the era, while the unique stance was a result of the beam axle swapped from trucks that helped give the car better weight distribution while keeping within the NHRA class rules. To race in the NHRA Gas Class, cars were required to keep the factory wheelbase and remain street legal including lights and windshield wipers.

As faster and more modern racecars came along, the Gassers became less popular, and the museum says that many of the cars were scrapped after they were no longer needed on the track. Hopefully exhibits like the one put on by ADM will create a new generation of Gasser enthusiast. While this exhibit sounds like an amazing experience, the museum also plans on hosting a car show dedicated to the Gasser on August 2nd. In addition to 80 classic Gassers, there will also be a forum with some of the men who raced these iconic machines back in the day.

If you happen to be in the El Segundo, CA area this month, this definitely seems like a must-see event for any car lover.
