As the saying goes, you can never go wrong with a classic. This also applies when it comes to buying a birthday present for the man who has everything, like former NBA player Dwyane Wade.
On January 17, Dwyane Wade turns 39 and, while it’s not one of those milestone years, it’s still a reason to celebrate. And to do so early.
Festivities started last weekend, with wife Gabrielle Union presenting Wade with what could possibly be the first in a long series of birthday presents. It’s also one of the coolest, at least as far as car enthusiasts are concerned: a 1988 Mercedes-Benz SL in impeccable condition.
You can see a video of the moment when a group of family and friends gathered outside Wade’s Hidden Hills, California mansion to see his reaction to his wife’s present. The classic Merc, in crisp white with a light brown leather interior, was parked in the driveway, with a matching giant ribbon on top.
Common sense says you should never surprise someone with a car as a present since it’s too much of a commitment to make, but this probably doesn’t apply to the rich. Wade, for instance, has an impressive car collection that includes one of the first Mercedes SLR McLarens in the world, a McLaren MP4-12C, a 570S and a 720S Spider, a Ferrari F12 Berlinetta and a GTC4Lusso T, a 2017 Jaguar XE and an F-Pace, a Lamborghini Gallardo, and a Maserati Ghibli. This classic beauty is in excellent company.
That said, he clearly loved it. Right after he took delivery of it, he took daughter Zaya for a ride in it, with son Zaire documenting part of it on his social media.
Speaking of presents, Gabrielle Union seems to have made a habit of feeding Wade’s passion for collectibles. Just last year, on Father’s Day, she presented him with a custom 1974 Ford Bronco, a very special project that took her several months to make it happen because it was put together “piece by piece.”
