French Scrapping Incentives Boost Minicar Production

Finally a good news in the industry category... According to reports, the scrapping incentives offered by the French government increased the minicars overall production in February but still not enough to overcome the total sales decline. Autonews informs today that despite a 40 percent drop in overall sales last month, the largest French manufacturer actually increased production to meet high demand for minicars.

Citroen is the first example as it raised the C1 minicar production by 9.4 percent to 9,703 units. Peugeot comes second with an increase by 6.1 percent of the 107 model, bringing the monthly output to 9,777 units. Both models are currently produced at the PSA Peugeot Citroen production facility in Kolin, Czech Republic that is co-owned by Toyota.

In addition, Renault recently announced that it plans to boost production of Twingo by approximately 8.9 percent to 14,110 units, following a high demand in major European markets.

Governments across Europe offered incentives of up to 5,000 euros to encourage people migrate towards low-emission models. As a result of such campaigns, new car sales in Germany grew up by 21.5 percent to 277,740 unit in February while the total output of production facilities based in Europe fell 39.7 percent to 1.07 million units compared to the same month of the previous year.

Carlos Ghosn, President of Renault, said in early February that the 3 billion euros funding package approved by the French government is the first step towards a successful revamp of the auto sector and, as you can see for yourself, the market is indeed showing the first signs of revival.

“We are very pleased with the loan granted to us by the French government. In light of the exceptional crisis impacting our entire industry, access to credit was indispensable for supporting our activity and that of the automotive industry. It will also enable us to pursue our developments and investments in sustainable mobility,” he said at that time.
