Ford proved it’s still a top contender in engine technology when it launched the 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine. This small three-cylinder turbocharged unit features quite a few patented inventions and has won the International Engine of the Year back in June 2012.
But the story isn’t over yet, as Ford gasoline engine development chief Andy Fraser has revealed the same unit has a lot more to give.
“We have a maximum capacity per cylinder of 500cc, so a 1.5-litre engine is certainly possible,” Fraser told AutoExpress. “In growing markets there are incentives for certain sizes of engines, so in Brazil they want a 1.0-litre engine, in India it’s 1.2 and in China it’s 1.5 – the EcoBoost engine could be all of those.”
Fraser revealed that wile the current output is 123 hp (125 PS), this could be increased to somewhere around 200 horsepower. The small EcoBoost will be introduced to a US-market Ford next year, presumably the Fiesta facelift (picture above). America would definitely want at least 150 horsepower in their B-hatch.
