Regarded as the most athletic Mustang ever, designed to tackle the world’s most challenging roads and race tracks, Ford’s Shelby GT350R received an odd upgrade today: back seats.
It seems that a lot of customers were very happy with their car but something was missing. Ford Performance listened to their opinions and came up with optional rear seats, because a satisfied customer is the best business strategy of all, as a wise man once said.
The kit features high-quality Alcantara material and high-contrast red accent stitching, for a great, straight-from-the-factory look and a consistent feel. As safety comes first, the seats include the GT350 occupant restraint systems.
“We always listen to customer feedback. So when many requested a back seat for their GT350R, we acted quickly to make it available,” Dave Pericak, global director at Ford Performance, stated.
The add-on costs $999 through Ford Performance Parts, and the carmaker insists that an authorized Ford dealer or service center must perform the installation. Those who already bought the GT350 R shouldn't worry, though, because the system is retrofitted, so you can bring more than one friend with you while driving up the mountain roads or on the track.
Ford Performance’s Shelby GT350R Mustang left the production line in August 2015 and it was designed to give the driver the ride of his lifetime. Powered by a 5.2-liter flat-plane-crank V8 engine that develops 526 horsepower and 429 lb-ft (581 Nm) of torque and fitted with a 3.73 Torsen limited-slip differential and Ford’s new MagneRide suspension system, the car lives up to the “American Muscle” car.
Of course, it doesn’t matter if you have 500 horsepower and a heavy car, so the American carmaker made the GT350R as light as possible. Even the wheels are built to weigh as little as possible. The carbon fiber front rims are treated with ceramic coatings applied with a plasma arc gun that liquefies ceramic material.
In other words, Ford used an aerospace-inspired coating applied to the inner wheel barrel and back of the spokes as a thermal barrier against the heat generated by the high-performance brakes.
The downside is that these rims come at a proportional price: around $7,000 for each wheel. Given the fact that you pay close to $30,000 for four wheels, new car money, you might want to pay more attention when you park it close to a curb.
