Ford to Launch Nine New Engines in 2010

American car manufacturer Ford Motor Co. announced it will launch in 2010 a fleet-wide new engine and transmissions range in North America. In its plan to reduce CO2 emissions and fuel consumption, Ford prepared an impressive range of nine new or upgraded engines and six new transmissions.

This represents an important step in the company’s five-year effort to modernize its entire global portfolio. The 2012 model year Ford Focus will receive an all-new normally aspirated 2.0-liter direct fuel injection engine, a premiere for a Ford vehicle in North America. Another important arrival will be the twin independent variable cam timing (Ti-VCT) on the 1.6-liter direct injection petrol engine. This engine is meant for small and affordable cars and will be mated to a new PowerShift six-speed and dual clutch transmission.

"Ford is delivering on our commitment to lower emissions, improve fuel economy and deliver the highest quality powertrains in the industry," said Barb Samardzich, Ford vice president, Powertrain Engineering. "We are making this happen with one of the most ambitious powertrain upgrades ever undertaken by Ford. By the end of 2010, nearly all of Ford's North American engines will have been upgraded or replaced since 2008."

In 2010, Ford will launch new engines and transmissions in Fiesta, Mustang, Super Duty and F-150. Mustang's new Ti-VCT 305-horsepower, 3.7-liter V-6 with six-speed automatic is expected to return around 30 mpg highway, making it a fuel economy leader in its segment. The Mustang GT will receive a new 5.0-liter V8, which develops 412 hp and 390 ft-lb. of torque and returns 25 mpg highway.

During the spring, Ford will also premiere a new Ford-designed-and-built Super Duty diesel truck engine. The 6.7-liter Power Stroke V-8 turbocharged diesel unit is expected to achieve impressive fuel consumption figures and towing and hauling power to match. The 2011 Super Duty also gets a new 6.2-liter gasoline engine.

The Ford F-150 will get the new EcoBoost 3.5-liter V-6, which delivers up to a 20 percent improvement in fuel economy and a 15 percent reduction in CO2 emissions versus larger-displacement engines.

"We are focused on sustainable technology solutions that can be used not for hundreds or thousands of cars, but for millions of cars, because that's how Ford will truly make a difference," said Samardzich.
