Ford have just announced the commencement of production of the only front-wheel drive hybrid transmission, currently made in the US. It will be used in a variety of cars, like Ford’s C-Max Hybrid and Energi Plug-In Hybrid, Fusion Hybrid and Energi Plug-In Hybrid, as well as the Lincoln MKZ Hybrid.
This is the result of a $220- (€180-) million investment by Ford in the Van Dyke transmission plant, which also adds 225 new jobs (after having already added an extra 130), for the production of the HF35 gearbox, which uses two electric motors and is of the continuously variable variety.
However, this is only part of a $632- (€517-) million investment in all of Ford’s North American transmission plants, an investment which seems to make the company’s officials very proud.
“Our investments in Van Dyke Transmission make it our most advanced, efficient transmission plant in the world,” said Jim Tetreault, vice president of North America Manufacturing. “This demonstrates our commitment to bringing jobs and technology back into Ford and North America – actions that not only benefit our employees but our customers and the communities where we do business.”
