Ford Reports Sales Up 19.4% in 2010

The big American automakers still had a hard time last year dealing with the economic downturn of 2009. However, the dark times were less severe for Ford as the company has just announced its December 2010 and year-end sales totals, which were up 6.7 and 19.4 percent respectively.

Combined full-year sales totals of the three Ford brands amounted to 1.935 million cars, up 19 percent versus a year ago, making this the largest increase of any full-line manufacturer in the US. During the last month of the year, the company had the highest number retails sales of any month since August 2009. Total sales (including fleet deliveries) amounted to 190,976 vehicles, up 7 percent versus a year ago.

“With our balanced line of high-quality, fuel-efficient products, we have a solid foundation to deliver more sales and improved results in 2011. Consideration for Ford is increasing beyond our traditional areas of strength – signaling that the seeds of growth already have taken hold,” said Ken Czubay, Ford vice president, U.S. Marketing, Sales and Service.

A record 174,523 cars sporting the blue oval left dealers' lots last month, a 9.6 percent increase compared to 2009. Meanwhile, Lincoln and Mercury sold 8,060 and 8,393 during the month. America’s best selling truck, Ford’s F-Series, led the pack with 54,888 deliveries during the period, up 13.9 percent from last December. The Fusion came in second with 22,619 in sales, while the Escape rounded out the top three with 18,691 sales. The prize for biggest percentage gain goes to the Explorer, which found 52.7 percent more customers than it did in the previous year.

For the whole of the year, cars sold 17 percent better than they did one year before, utility vehicles 13 percent and trucks were up 27 percent. Lincoln and Mercury vehicles accounted for 85,828 and 93,195 in sales, up 2.4 and 1 percent over the disappointing 2009 values.
