Ford Recalls 870k F-150 Trucks Over Unintended Electric Parking Brake Activation

Ford enjoys the rather undesirable title of the automaker with the most recalls in 2023. As per the NHTSA, the Dearborn-based automaker issued a whopping 35 recalls from the beginning of the year.
The latest recall involves a staggering 870,701 pickup trucks, namely the 2021 through 2023 model year F-150. What is the problem with said workhorses? Put simply, the rear axle wire harness may contact the rear axle housing, damaging the electric parking brake wiring.

Said condition leads to the unexpected activation of the electric parking brake while driving, leading to a loss of control, increasing the risk of a crash. February 23 is when the Critical Concern Review Group started investigating the problem due to a rising number of warranty claims and field reports. The TL;DR version of the investigation is that exposed copper wiring results in the grounding of circuits on the rear axle housing.

Engineers further noted some corrosion on the rear axle housing. This generation of the Ford F-150 is pretty notorious for underbody corrosion, with yours truly covering this issue back in March 2021.

Electric parking brake activation occurs if the low side electric parking brake's motor circuit is shorted to ground. The second-largest automaker of the Big Three in Detroit is aware of three field reports and 918 warranty claims related to said problem. The claims and reports in question were received between August 2021 and July 2023. Of them, 299 alleged unintended electric parking brake activation. And of those, 19 allege unintended parking brake activation while driving.

Thankfully, no one was hurt. Ford isn't aware of accidents or third-party damages related to said condition either. The suspect rear axle wiring harness is listed under two part numbers: ML3Z-15K857-C and ML3Z-15K857-A. These part numbers carry over to the replacement harnesses, which differ from the originals by means of a small plastic shield that prevents chafing.

Come September 11, dealers will be instructed to have the rear axle wiring harness inspected. If the abrasion tape covering the wire bundle exhibits any wear, the harness will be replaced in full. If there's no wear, service technicians will install a protective tie strap and tape wrap. Of course, affected customers won't be charged a cent for this service. Owners will be notified by first-class mail between September 11 and 15.

Supplied by none other than the Ford Motor Company, the suspect wiring harnesses equip F-150 vehicles with a single exhaust. Recalled vehicles were produced between January 8, 2020 and February 25, 2023.

Scheduled to receive a facelift for 2024, the F-150 currently retails at $33,695 for the rear-drive XL Regular Cab 3.3L PFDI V6. When it comes to commercial success, the F-Series totaled 382,893 deliveries in the first half of 2023. By comparison, the Silverado and Sierra clocked over 400,000 deliveries in said period.
