Ford has announced a new safety recall for vehicles it manufactured and fitted with airbags from Takata. This is the second phase of the famed Takata airbag scandal, which involves defective airbag inflators because of the lack of desiccant, a substance that prevents the formation of humidity.
In case the defective airbag inflators are deployed, they might explode with excessive force, and there is a risk that parts of the inflator will puncture the airbag and hit passengers.

The Takata airbag recall has registered 13 confirmed deaths because of the previous problem discovered with defective inflators, and injuries are in the hundreds.

The recall campaign announced by Ford Motor Company targets the repair of 1,898,728 vehicles. Out of these, 1,896,443 were sold in the United States of America and federalized territories. Meanwhile, 1,304 of these went to Canada, and only one was sold in Mexico.

For all the affected cars, authorized Ford and Lincoln dealers will replace the passenger-side front airbag inflator. This is not the first Takata-related airbag recall, and the Ranger has been targeted by the previous recall action. Naturally, this is not Ford’s fault, as the automaker did not know that Takata supplied potentially defective airbag inflators

According to the Blue Oval, the company is not aware of any injuries or deaths related to this potential problem in the almost 1.9 million vehicles affected by the newly announced recall campaign.

The affected models were manufactured between 2005 and 2011. We are talking about the 2006-2011 Ford Fusion, 2007-2010 Ford Edge, 2007-2011 Ford Ranger, 2005-2011 Ford Mustang, 2007-2010 Lincoln MKX, and 2006-2011 model years for the Lincoln MKZ, Zephyr, and Mercury Milan cars made in North America.

Ford will begin notifying known owners soon. Customers with the affected models and corresponding model years can check if their vehicles are involved in the recall using the Ford website and clicking the “safety recalls” section at the bottom of the page, where they can enter the VIN.
