Ford Europe Denied New Coupe Because of Crisis

The idea of a compact Ford coupe has been on our minds ever since we saw the Evos Concept. We toyed with the idea that it would be called the Capri and be based on the Focus, or that the new Mondeo would become a two-door.
Just like VW took the Golf 3-door, removed some of the practicality and turned it into the sexy Scirocco, Ford could have made the Focus ST into a FWD coupe with a slightly wider track. But their proposal for a glamorous coupe to slot under the Mustang has been denied.

According to Inside Line sources, Ford CEO Alan Mulally rejected the car because the European market for such niche vehicles is weak.

Still, at least Europe will be getting the Mustang, imported from America. But some people will be put off by the size, the still thirsty engines and the price, which likely will creep to up to over €40,000 after taxes.

He also loves local car culture from all over the world, so don't be surprised to see him getting excited about weird Japanese imports, low-rider VWs out of Germany, replicas from Russia or LS swaps down in Florida.
