If you're in the market for a B-segment crossover but aren't convinced by the looks of the Peugeot 2008, Renault Captur or Nissan Juke, then you might like the Ford EcoSport. Available from £14,995, the all-new model boasts with small car practicality and affordability wrapped in a spacious SUV package.
“All-new Ford EcoSport delivers a clever and connected small car for our European customers,” said Nick Fitzgerald, EcoSport chief programme engineer. “Ford’s new urban SUV is economical, flexible and stylish, and will line-up alongside the new B-MAX compact multi-activity vehicle, the best-selling Fiesta to complete Ford’s comprehensive small car line-up for the UK.” Speaking of which, this model is underpinned by the Ford B3 platform, which has been around since 2002.

Developed entirely in South America, the second-gen EcoSport has been designed with the European customer in mind. However, the 4-star Euro NCAP safety rating isn't one of its strong points. The Indian-built model is available in Europe with a 1.5-liter diesel with 90 PS on tap, as well as two petrol engines - a 125 PS 1-liter mill and a 110 PS 1.5-liter unit. Despite the lack of oomph, the three-pot 1-liter returns 53.3 U.K. mpg if you drive it like a granny, while the oil burner is good for 61.4 U.K. mpg.

Just like any other car from this segment, the Ford EcoSport is all about the look and it's oriented toward people with active lifestyles. Thanks to the short bonnet, raked front pillars and a distinctive five-piece chrome front grille with angular headlamps and signature LED light strips, the EcoSport is a good looking so-and-so, while the full-sized spare wheel mounted on the tailgate gives it a rugged feel as well. In terms of practicality, the boot can swallow up to 375 liters of bits and bobs with the rear seats in place. In addition to that, the cabin has 20 other smart stowage solutions.

Although it comes only with front-wheel drive, the little EcoSport has a 180-mm ground clearance, front and rear skid plates, a 22.1-degree approach angle and 35 degrees of departure angle. Therefore, the cheeky Ford can do a fair share of green laning. Last but not least, customers of the Ford EcoSport benefit from goodies such as Hill Start Assist, cruise control, automatic wipers and headlights, rear-parking sensors, as well as the Ford Sync system that lets you make a phone call via voice commands.
