The 6R140 is a tenured six-speed automatic that Ford uses in heavy- and medium-duty applications. Three of those – namely the E-350, F-650, and F-750 – have been hit with a recall concerning their transmissions.
A member of the 6R family, the 6R140 is called this way after the maximum torque it can handle. Approximately 1,400 Nm, that is, which converts to a whopping 1,033 pound-feet. Turning our attention back to the recall, the Ford Motor Company identified a transmission casting defect in the upper valve body casting, increasing the chances of the main control poppet valve getting stuck wide open.

In turn, restricted lubrication flow to the rear housing bushing results in excessive heat generation. This will erode the rear seal, leading to transmission fluid leakage and the loss of torque retention on the abutment plate bolts. Ultimately, the park actuator will be rendered unable to engage the park pawl.

Ford became aware of this problem on August 3 following a report brought to the attention of the Critical Concern Review Group. The report was filed on June 15 by a commercial fleet customer whose 2024 model year F-650 had experienced a transmission fluid leak from the rear seal. Thus far, Dearborn's favorite son is aware of 95 reports with receipt dates ranging from March 24 to August 14.

Dealers have already been instructed to inspect the suspect transmissions, which bear part numbers LC2P-7000-FA for the E-350, MC4P-7000-VA for the F-650, and MC4P-7000-XA for the F-750. If metal fragments are found in the transmission valve pan, dealer technicians will be much obliged to replace the entire transmission assembly. If not, only the valve body and extension housing will be replaced at no charge to the affected customers.

Owner notifications will be mailed beginning October 30 through November 3. An estimated 5,975 vehicles are recalled, split between 2,525 units of the E-350, 2,575 of the F-650, and 695 of the F-750. Production dates range from December 6, 2022 to August 3, 2023 for the E-350 and December 12, 2022 to August 4, 2023 for the medium-duty trucks.

Available in Stripped Chassis and Cutaway flavors, the E-Series E-350 is priced at $33,520 for the former and $36,715 for the latter. If you want an E-350 Cutaway with dual rear wheels, make that $36,970 (excluding the destination freight charge). Advertised as the TorqShift SelectShift, the 6R140 is connected to a 7.3-liter pushrod V8 that produces 325 ponies and 450 pound-feet (610 Nm) of twist.

As for the F-650 and F-750, we're dealing with 335 horsepower and 468 pound-feet (634 Nm). It should be noted that 6.7-liter Power Stroke V8-engined trucks use the TorqShift HD 10-speed automatic, which is internally referred to as 10R140. Said transmission is also used by the F-250 through F-600 with the aforementioned Power Stroke V8.
