As production of the current-generation F-150 is coming to an end, with the redesigned 2015 truck already under development, Ford dealers are reportedly stockpiling the 2014 model in order to avoid production shortages that may occur with next year’s launch.
“We’ve been ordering as many of the current model as we can. There will be some plant downtime that we have to contend with,” sMark Smith, president of Dick Smith Ford in Raytown, Missouri, told Detroit News.
Ford’s Kansas City Assembly Plant will continue to manufacture the 2014 F-150 through the end of next year, but production is expected to fall to 820,000 in 2014 from nearly 900,000. The brand new 2015 pickup truck will be built at the Dearborn Truck Plant starting July.
Previewed by the Ford Atlas concept at the 2013 Detroit Auto Show, the next-generation F-150 is expected to be about 700 pounds lighter than the current iteration. Rumor has it the truck will drop the current fully boxed frame design.
