When Ford launched the first Fiesta ST back in 2005, the hot supermini market wasn't so well established as it is now. So the gave the car a 2-liter engine, 150 horsepower and low price sticker, placing it right between the less powerful Citroen C2 VTS and the more powerful Clio RS.
While it wasn't as fast as a Clio, the Fiesta ST wasn't built in France… if you know what we mean. It simple yet elegant interior was well built and the cars had decent reliability. After all, the same engine was being used by the Focus with no problems whatsoever.
That tradition of German build quality seems to continue with the second generation Fiesta ST, production of which has just begun at the company's factory in Cologne.
There's no official press release to speak of right now, but this video is more than enough for us to figure out what's what. The Cologne factory employs 4,000 people and already makes the regular Fiesta on the same assembly line, both in left- and right-hand drive.
Unlike the old Clio III RS, which has a different front subframe, this Fiesta ST has no such suspension wizardry, and so can be mass-produced on the same line. But unlike a regular Fiesta, it's got a big 1.6-liter turbo engine, sports Recaro seats and a different body kit.
