Ford has officially confirmed that it will be pulling out of the World Rally Championship, at the end of the current season in progress. Again, it is the poor economic climate which is dominating Europe that has prompted the company to take such a drastic decision.
Roelant de Waard, Ford of Europe’s VP of marketing, sales and service stated that the company needed to “reduce the WRC commitments and deploy their resources in other areas.” However, while they may officially be pulling out, they may still offer technical support to their racing partner, M-Sport, a Cumbria-based company, owned by Malcom Wilson.
This rather sad piece of news comes just one week after Mini made a similar announcement, for which they cited the same reasons as Ford. In the case of Mini, however, they need to finish the season, in order to get the Countryman homologated for WRC duty, so that privately-owned teams will be able to race it.
