Fiat will build Maserati’s new Levante SUV at its plant in Turin, Italy, despite original reports that were suggesting manufacturing might take place in Detroit, alongside the Jeep Grand Cherokee.
According to Automotive News Europe, CEO Sergio Marchionne confirmed that the Trident’s first SUV will be manufactured at the Mirafiori facility, after Fiat has committed to investing around $1.6 billion to relaunch Maserati. Marchionne also suggested the construction of an Afla Romeo SUV variant as well, but no other details have been revealed.
“I’ve made a commitment. We are not closing Mirafiori. We will make luxury cars for both Maserati and for Alfa Romeo”, said Marchioni, ruling away any rumours of a possible Mirafiori factory shutdown.
The new Maserati Levante, set to be unveiled in 2014 and hit the market by 2015, is expected to compete with the Porsche Cayenne and Range Rover. In terms of design, the Levante will, most probably, look much the same as the 2011 Kubang Concept.
