Fiat Chairman Says Alfa Romeo Is Not for Sale

A few days ago a rumor emerged that the Italian brand Alfa Romeo is about to be bought by German manufacturer Volkswagen. As a response, Fiat S.p.A. Chairman Luca di Montezemolo said Alfa Romeo is not for sale "under any circumstances."

"We will present the new Alfa that substitutes the 147 and we think there are also very important opportunities for Alfa Romeo in the United States," Montezemolo told Reuters in an interview.

The rumor was launched by analysts from the Sanford Bernstein asset management fund, who said on December 10 that "Alfa may not be expensive and its cars would fit on VW's platforms." Volkswagen is definitely ready to invest, as it just bought stakes in Porsche and Suzuki and analysts said that the Alfa brand could help Audi in its fight with Mercedes-Benz and BMW.

Another important aspect is that Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne asked for a strategic review of Alfa Romeo in order to make the best decision for the future of the brand. The big question is if he should stop funding the brand after the introduction of the new Giulietta or continue developing a new line up with the help of Chrysler platforms.

Due to its incredibly old model range, Alfa’s sales decreased from 203,000 units in 2000 to 103,000 units in 2008. The Italian brand lost between 200 and 400 million each year for the last decade.
