Ferrari Boss Asks FIA for Rule Changes

Ferrari's Luca di Montezemolo seems to use every opportunity he gets – in the public eye, that is – to put some pressure on the International Automobile Federation (FIA). Even with his “enemy” Max Mosley gone, the Italian boss doesn't miss the chance to fire some shots at the international body, mainly connected with the new set of regulations it has agreed upon starting 2013.

And it's not rocket science to anyone that what Ferrari's really after is scrapping the rules regarding the introduction of a new 1.6-litre turbocharged engine from 2013 onwards. After all, di Montezemolo has thrown that into the public agenda a couple of times in the last few months, just to make sure his voice will be heard on this topic from now on.

Curiously enough though, the Ferrari president also addressed other aspects that need to be changed in F1, one of which is testing. And that's surely a topic where every single member of the FOTA (Formula One Teams Association) agrees that the FIA must reassess its position. Formula 1 currently benefits from only 15 days of testing per year, probably the shortest “training” period in all professional sports.

We will have to work together with the [FIA] for an improvement of rules and regulations,” said di Montezemolo during the launch event of the Ferrari F150, in Maranello, according to Autosport.

I don't think it is possible that it is the only professional sport where it is not possible to train. We need to avoid that F1 only becomes an aerodynamic test. We are not in the satellite world; we are not in the aerodynamic world. We need to leave the space to the mechanics and the engines. We need stable rules, but we should contain the DNA of F1.”

That means maximum technology, maximum performance and innovative technology - and also to anticipate what will be the transfer of technology to GT cars. It will be useful to get back to KERS, which opens a very important perspective for GT cars.
