Ferrari Disagrees with New Engine Formula in F1

A few weeks back, Ferrari's Luca di Montezemolo demanded clear rules for the upcoming season(s) of Formula One, urging the International Automobile Federation (FIA) to set some undisputed ground rules for the campaigns to come, from a technological standpoint. And the ruling body did just that, although the new rules did not exactly please the Ferrari boss.

Switching to a new engine formula for the 2013 season of F1 was supposed to be a new direction towards cost cutting for the future, yet most of the high-ranked figures in F1 don't see it that way. And Di Montezemolo is the first to speak out, pointing out to the fact that not only the true values of the sport will be lost with the introduction of the downsized 4-cylinder turbocharged engine, but the move will in fact increase costs in the series.

All engine manufacturers will have to start developing the new engine, and this will imply some huge costs over the next couple of years. And that's because, while pumping money into the new engine, the makers will also have to continue taking care of the existing V8s for the next couple of years.

It cannot be that we give up everything that made our sport for the sake of costs,” said Di Montezemolo in a recent interview with Germany's Auto Motor und Sport. “F1 is about extreme innovation and technology.”

While insisting that Ferrari will not stand in the way of the new regulations, Di Montezemolo felt the need to confirm his company's disagreement over the new engine formula.

I can't get used to it. It's not for a sport in which we once had 12 cylinder engines. Ferrari will not stand in the way, but we are saying very clearly that we are not happy about it,” he added, after last week he pointed out that Ferrari will never use such engines in its production car business, therefore the money pumped into F1 will have to reasoning whatsoever in terms of the company's global products.
