Ferdinand Piech has been at the head of the VW group for the last 18 years, and despite having reached the age of 75 himself, he does not plan to retire any time soon. In fact, he sees more room for the Wolfsburg colossus to grow and expand further.
Piech stated earlier that that he would keep his chairman position until the launch of the all-new Golf, yet now that that’s passed, it seems that he’s still there. In a recent interview, he said: "I have asked (CEO) Martin Winterkorn to launch the next Golf. A new model of the Golf usually comes out every 5-7 years. At least that long I will cover Winterkorn's back as chairman,"

Currently, his contract is signed until the end of 2016, so we’ll be seeing a lot more of him over the next few years. However, analysts are not pleased by this extreme continuity at VW, claiming that ‘fresh blood’ is needed in the management side of the 12-brand-strong group. Piech also regrets letting their designer, Peter Schreyer, go and become Kia’s design chief, as the Korean brand is beginning to become a problem in Europe.
