Mircea Gradu, the man behind the development and launch of the 2014 Jeep Cherokee’s innovative all-wheel drive system, has left the Chrysler Group “to pursue other interests”, the Detroit-based manufacturer announced last week.
Appointed to head Chrysler’s Transmission, Powertrain and Driveline Engineering department in 2011, Gradu’s main responsibility was to ensure the 2014 Jeep Cherokee’s new drive system, which allows the rear axle to freewheel to save fuel, worked properly.

Initially scheduled to hit showrooms in August, the 2014 Jeep Cherokee met its first customers nearly two months later. Chrysler delayed the launch to properly calibrate the software that operates its 9-speed automatic transmission, rear driveshaft and differential.

Chrysler appointed Bob Lee as interim Head of Transmission Powertrain and Driveline Engineering. The 57-year-old is also head of Engine, Powertrain and Electrified Propulsion Systems Engineering and will continue to serve as Powertrain Coordination on the Group Executive Council for Fiat.
