EV Cup UK Race Dates Announced

There is little time left before the start of a racing series that is hoped to change the way people look at EVs and their performances. The EV Cup, as it is called, will kick off this summer, promising to become, if it survives its infancy, the premiere racing series for EVs.

During the Autosport International Car Racing Show in Birmingham, where the models which will line up for this first edition of the event are displayed, the organizers of the series announced what may be considered the official calendar of the EV Cup.

In 2011, seven races will be held across Europe, starting on August 6, at Silverstone. The inaugural race in the UK will be followed by similar events at Snetterton (August 20), Rockingham (September 10) and Brands Hatch (October 23). The rest of the races will be run on circuits in Portugal, Spain and the United States.

"The electric car is already changing the world and soon will begin to revolutionise the face of traditional motorsport across the world, by embracing the issues of the day, from straightforward zero emissions to eco-friendly cars, sustainability and corporate social responsibility," said Sylvain Filippi, director of the EV Cup.

The Cup will comprise two main categories, City EV class (Think City EVs) and Sports EV class (Westfield iRacers). A third class, Prototype EV, will be added later on and will include ultra-fast, non-production electric race cars.

The inaugural season of the EV Cup is supported by CAA Sports, who will assist the organizers with corporate partnerships, business development, brand marketing, event management, and media advisory.
