Just recently, we showed you a rendering of the upcoming Tesla Model 3 and now we’re back on this compact executive topic as the company has a timeframe for us.
CEO Elon Musk used yesterday’s Tesla investors call to announce an approximate launch date for the compact executive EV - “We are hoping to show the Model 3 in March of next year,” Musk said.

The obvious grain of salt was included in the announcement, with the CEO explaining this is a tentative date and that the following months could see a change of plans. As for the start of the production, Musk said late 2017 is the most likely time.

The Model 3 will be Tesla’s answer to vehicles such as the BMW 3 Series, being about 20 percent more compact when compared to the Model S. The pricing is expected to sit somewhere in the $35,000 area.

Of course, this means the Model 3 will reach a broader audience than both the Model S and the upcoming Model X crossover. With a company like Tesla, the appeal-broadener increases the power of the brand much more than in the case of a more traditional automaker.

Make no mistake though, the more affordable price doesn’t mean the clientele will loosen its range expectations. Tesla has learned a lot of lessons with the Model S and while no official figure has been offered so far, you should expect the maximum range to sit anywhere between 200 and 300 miles (320 and 480 km).

Speaking of the company’s crossover, Tesla is almost ready to offer us the Model X. Production is already under way, with Tesla scheduled to open its online customiser in July. This will be one electric summer for Tesla, as the hot season will also see them debut delivery of the Powerwall home battery.
