Israeli company Better Place has inaugurated its first electric vehicle (EV) demonstration center in Israel, a site built inside a refurbished oil tank to remind people of the global automotive power source shift.
“Israel welcomes the world to come and experience the thrill of clean, electric vehicles,” the company said.
During the event, the company announced a partnership with Dor Alon, one of the biggest gas station operators in the country, for the development of a battery replacement network on the latter’s existing infrastructure and the signing of 92 corporate fleet owners to date. This list of partners which have agreed to convert a part of the total 45,000 internal combustion powered vehicles to EVs from Renault, when these will be available next year, includes names such as Motorola and Computer Associates.
The Better Place Center aims to present the company’s solution to the public. This consists of a electric, battery-powered car, a charging infrastructure complete with battery switch stations and a special service pack destined to assist EV users.
The facility is built on the Pi Gilot site, one of the last gasoline and distribution centers in Israel. The Center has an area of 750 square meters, offers visitors a special virtual experience and a 1.5 kilometer test track for the EVs. The Renault Fluence Zero Emissions, which will be brought to the Israeli market in 2011, will be brought to the Center for testing in the future. Hundreds of visitors, both from Israel and abroad are expected to enter the Center’s gates in the first 12 months.
