Renault Partners with Better Place

With the 2009 Frankfurt Auto Show only just beginning, French manufacturer Renault is already making plans for the future of its EV range. And, with a range of no less than four electric vehicles unveiled at the event, making those plans big is a walk in the park.

Renault today signed a definitive agreement with Better Place to insure the success of the Fluence ZE. The car will be distributed, at first, in Israel and Denmark in the first half of 2011. The two parties have agreed to sell no less than 100.000 vehicles for both countries by 2016.

The signature of this agreement is a step forward for Renault’s electric vehicle strategy. Fluence ZE will be the first Renault passenger electric vehicle launched in 2011 in more than 20 countries worldwide. It will be an attractive and spacious electric family car that will enjoy highly competitive running costs compared to conventional vehicles," Carlos Ghosn, Renault CEO said in a release.

Today marks an historic milestone in the tremendous collaboration between Renault and Better Place to bring to market a mainstream electric car that’s more convenient and affordable than an ICE car," Shai Agassi, Better Place founder added.

The Fluence ZE, the car at the center of the agreement, is powered by an electric motor that develops 95 horsepower and 226 Nm of torque and comes with a lithium-ion battery that ensures a range of 160 km.

There are three recharging modes available, a standard charge that takes between four and eight hours, a quick charge (around 20 minutes) plus an immediate solution that needs three minutes - namely Renault's Quickdrop rapid battery exchange system.
