As more and more drivers are involved in cars accidents, the European Union decided to bring forth a new initiative that is expected to reduce the number of fatalities.
We’re talking about the eCall initiative, a technology that is expected to save lives as it will dramatically shorten the time of intervention of emergency services. We all know that every minute counts when we’re discussing injured victims and so what can be more helpful than to have help arrive as fast as possible.

Therefore, in June last year, the European Commission adopted two proposals to ensure that this particular system will be made available in almost two years. In case you were wondering how the eCall technology works, let us tell you that it will be installed in the driver’s vehicle and if by an unfortunate chance the said car is involved in an accident, the eCall automatically calls the nearest emergency center.

Another important thing is the fact that there is no problem whatsoever if by any chance the injured person is unable to speak, being unconscious or just shocked, as the technology sends a “Minimum Set of Data.” With this, the operator receives the exact location of the crash site and help is on the way.

Indeed, it is quite helpful as numerous people involved in car crashes can end up with severe injuries and the sooner they receive aid, the better. The European Commission actually believes that the eCall could save up to 2500 lives a year.

If by any chance you were wondering when you’ll be able to get your hands on the eCall system, we’re happy to inform you that the objective is to have it functioning across the EU by 2015.
