The stuff you’re about to hear is probably what some people use to convince tree huggers that petrol is actually good for some things. We’re about to embark on a trip that features some absolutely enticing sounds.
We all know that the E92 M3 was the only M3 ever made with a V8 under the bonnet and what seemed like sacrilege at one point became legend afterwards. That’s right, the S65 4-liter V8 it used wrote history in more than one way.

Apart from the fact that it was the only mill of its kind to be used on an M3 it also became the last naturally aspirated engine to be manufactured by BMW. On top of that, it made a sound that could get you to fall in love.

No matter what bad things can be said about the older M car, all was forgiven the moment the engine was turned on. That being said, add a custom exhaust to the mix and things might go overboard.

Usually, they do, and I don’t find exhausts that are too loud in any way attractive. To me, it’s the tone, not the volume that matters and this M3, fitted with a Stanic performance exhaust is just right.

Right alongside it you’ll also notice an AC Schnitzer BMW M4 that, in my book, offers the best exhaust sound for the new S55 3-liter inline 6-cylinder engine (that was widely criticized at launch). The showdown is impressive and it could go either way but to my ears, the V8 sound will never get old.
