One man and one woman went out for a ride in a Toyota sedan in Maryland, over the weekend, and ended up in a swimming pool. Car and everything.
The Washington Post confirms the strange incident, citing Montgomery County Fire and Rescue spokesman Pete Piringer, who says that one passenger was teaching the other how to drive. He doesn’t say who was behind the wheel when the car jumped a curb, smashed through a fence and then landed into the North Creek Community Center Pool.

But feel free to assume it was the woman, because that would play right into the stereotype of women being such lame, impossible-to-teach drivers.

The man and woman are said to have been in their 50s or 60s, and neither was hurt. By the time first responders arrived on the scene, they had managed to pull themselves out of the car and were waiting by the pool, soaking wet. The car was still in the pool, of course.

Luckily, no one else was hurt in the incident either. The North Creek Community Center Pool was closed for the season, but it still had water. Had it been empty, this would have been less a fun story and more a tragic one, because results would have varied considerably.

More details on the incident have not been released, but an investigation is underway. Police are not expected to release the names of the 2 passengers, so unless they talk to the media themselves, we might never know who was the terrible learner driver or why they chose a public road for a driving lesson. A dirt road on a field or an empty parking lot would have served just as well, just like it did for many learner drivers and their parents / relatives / friends. You know how this goes.
