One couple from Buckhead, Atlanta spent their 4th of July not watching fireworks but doing something far more thrilling and many times more dangerous: trying to stop a car thief from driving off in their car.
The woman, who chooses to remain anonymous until police catch the guy, even jumped in the passenger seat and tried to beat him into submission, but only managed to make him crash the vehicle.

The good news is that the car was recovered, though damaged. The dog that was inside on the backseat, which prompted this type of response from the owners, was not harmed. But police would rather you never do this yourself, if you ever found yourself in a similar situation.

The incident happened outside a local ice scream shop, at about 8 o’clock in the evening. The man and woman pulled up in front of the shop, parking very near to it because they wanted to be able to see the vehicle, the woman says for WSB-TV 2 Atlanta. They’d left their rescue dog, Milly, inside, with the AC on.

“It was hot outside so we left the dog in the car, but we wanted to leave the A/C running. We thought she’d be fine, we’ll only be a minute,” the woman says. They’d locked the car, so they didn’t imagine anyone would think of stealing it.

In surveillance video released by the shop in the hope of helping catch the car thief, a man is seen walking to and fro in the rather deserted parking lot, before finally making a move for the black car. As soon as he breaks the window and opens the door, the couple rushes out.

The man and woman go for separate sides of the car, but only the woman actually gets inside. She says for the media outlet that, once in the passenger seat, she tried to grab and punch him as hard as she could, repeatedly telling him to “Get out.”

He did, eventually. The car crashed into another vehicle, and the thief made his escape on foot.

Damage to the car isn’t extensive, but police warn to never put yourself in such dangerous situations, even if a beloved pet is involved.
