Craig Currie, Nissan Race Academy 2009 Top Gun

Nissan's Race Academy, a purpose created high performance driving school for the manufacturer's performance models announced it best of the best today. Following an intense training program and after competing with another 600 drivers, Brit Craig Currie managed to take the top of the podium this year.

His prize? Well, first of all, the title of Nissan Top Gun driver of 2009. Secondly, a change for him to take on the Dunlop Sport Maxx Cup, behind the wheel of a specially prepared Nissan 370Z.

The Academy, set up for free for Nissan GT-R and 370Z buyers, ran its course on the famous Silverstone circuit. Currie, owner of a GT-R, entered the race, as Nissan says, somewhat oblivious to what was to come.

As he himself admits, he wasn't even convinced he will get passed the morning heats. Apparently, he did and, after taking on every driver from each Race Academy session, managed to snatch the title. Now, the winner, currently bike racer, only awaits to “get stuck in and have a good race" in the Dunlop Sport Maxx Cup.

The Academy was set up initially by Nissan in order to give GT-R customer a taste of what they will experience behind the wheel of the car, after they take delivery (sometimes even 12 months later).

It only debuted last year and was rated by about 98 percent of those attending as the best manufacturer driving event. For the 2009 competition, the 370Z model was also added to the list.
