Coulthard Slams New F1 Teams' Poor Speed

A former Red Bull racer himself, David Coulthard slammed the big gap in performance between Formula One teams in the 2010 campaign. Obviously, his reaction was triggered by the horrific accident involving 33-year old Australian driver Mark Webber and Lotus' Heikki Kovalainen in the Valencia race last weekend.

The accident occurred as a consequence of 1) Kova closing the door on Webber at the end of the straight line and 2) the Finn's early braking when approaching the corner. As the T127 is obviously a less performing car than the RB6, it needed more time to break, and Kovalainen pushed the pedal sooner. Webber was at that point involved in an overtaking maneuver and was taken by surprise, failing to dodge the Lotus at the last second. You all know what happened next!

Talking about the causes of the incident, DC urged all the teams and the drivers to have a meeting and figure out some guidelines for these types of situations, while also asking the FIA to look closely into ensuring some sort of speed equity between the 2010 challengers.

The discussion in the drivers meetings is that huge closing speeds is a dangerous thing on the race track. Obviously the Red Bull (has) massive top speed relative to the Lotus and it just catches the drivers out. You don't want to have more than six, seven eight kilometres an hour difference between the fastest and the slowest cars,” said the current DTM driver and BBC commentator.

Additionally, he raised a question mark about the introduction of the Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS) next year, a device that would further increase the speed gap between the big teams and the newly-entrants – considering that the new teams have already announced they will not develop the unit for 2011.

I think the FIA and the drivers and the designers will be having a conversation about that after this terrible incident,” added DC.
