Cosworth will open a $30 million factory in Detroit to supply an undisclosed automaker.
Without identifying the partner in an interview, the representatives of the British supplier of powertrain products did mention that the automaker in question produces “high-performance road cars.”

We also know that Cosworth will manufacture cylinder heads for V8 engines at the factory in Shelby Township, Michigan. The same area hosts the Packard Proving Grounds, a complex established by the defunct Packard Motor Car Company of Detroit.

As Automotive News explains, the detail comes from a memo of the Michigan Economic Development Corporation. The same note shows that the British corporation chose the location instead of a site in Indiana. It is important to remark that the core of Cosworth’s U.S. business is based in Indianapolis.

Once the plant begins manufacturing, Cosworth will seek new partners for its U.S. factory. The British company hopes to build parts for more than just V8 engines, and to add more clients to its repertoire. After all, it is dangerous for a supplier only to deal with one customer, no matter who the two parties are.

Cosworth’s Detroit factory will begin production in 2018, and will be flexible enough to manufacture components for different automakers. The company has big plans for the US market, as it considers expanding the site or even opening an additional facility in the future.

A brief look at factory jobs within 25 miles (40 km) of the Shelby Township area using a specialized website revealed that Ford Motor Company, General Motors, and Cummins have facilities nearby. Suppliers like Bosch Rexroth and Siemens also have plants in the area, and so does Continental. We searched for this out of curiosity and because Hal Reisinger, Cosworth CEO, stated that they selected the place due to “proximity to the customer base.”

At this point, we remind you that the Ford Motor Company was founded in Michigan and operates several facilities in the state. The Blue Oval also has old ties with Cosworth, and these were successful. Among their collaborations is the Cosworth evolution of the Ford DFV engine, which is the most successful power plant in Formula One history. The unit has 155 race wins in almost 20 years of competition.
