German sports cars are pricey, and limited-edition models are prohibitively expensive. When you start talking about low-volume cars from the 1980s and 1990s, things do not get better. While these models did suffer from depreciation in their early years, their values are now skyrocketing to incredible proportions.
BMW’s E30 M3 model can reach an asking price close to that of an all-new car if it’s in pristine condition, and its arch-rival, the Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.3-16V falls into the same category.

Once you start talking about an Evolution II model, made in just 500 units, the selling price gets to an astronomical value.

In this story, we write about number 345 of 500, a Homologation special built by Mercedes-Benz to be eligible to race the 190 in the DTM championship. The car is for sale in the USA, and only covered 17,578 kilometers, the equivalent of 10,922 miles.

Furthermore, this example is a one-owner car, and has never been raced or crashed. Both points are crucial to the high asking price of $279,000. Moreover, the seller claims this particular example is one of the lowest mileage examples known to exist, and it is in impressive shape. Californian residents need not apply, as the vehicle is not road-legal in that state.

The 1991 Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.5-16V Evolution II is a Cosworth-tuned model, and this particular example has never been restored. The eBay seller claims it has a clean title with matching numbers, as well as a rust-free body shell.

As you can observe in the photo gallery of the story, the engine’s oil pressure is at the maximum level at idle, a clear indication of the proper state of the power plant. We cannot help but notice that this particular example has a mysterious on/off switch on the driver side, and the seller did not disclose its purpose.

Critics will also observe that the car has lost its original Becker Grand Prix radio unit, which has been swapped with an aftermarket audio unit. The rest of the elements of the vehicle appear to be original, apart maybe from that racing-like splitter on the front bumper. Naturally, the tires have been replaced, as the car has been maintained over the years in spite of the fact that it has not been driven for too long.

Sebastian's love for cars began at a young age. Little did he know that a career would emerge from this passion (and that it would not, sadly, involve being a professional racecar driver). In over fourteen years, he got behind the wheel of several hundred vehicles and in the offices of the most important car publications in his homeland.
