In today’s eco-aware world, some modern cities have chosen to switch from automobiles to bicycles, with pedal power being on the way to become a urban trend.Certain consumers choose to reduce their driving time, switching to cycling, as this tackles the congestion, obesity and climate change issues.
Denmark’s capital, Copenhagen is one of the most bike-friendly cities in the world and this is why it will host the global Velo-city Conference on June 22-25. The event will include cycling experts, professionals and urban trendsetters from all over the world.
The conference Velo-city Global 2010 is celebrating 30 years of Velo-city conferences co-hosted by different cities and the European Cyclist’s Federation by reaching a global level for the first time.
The theme of the conference is “Different Gears - Same Destination”, with the initiative aiming to prove that despite our differences, we should all have the common aim to reduce the CO2 emissions.
“Copenhagen is aiming to become the first CO2 neutral capital in the world. One of the ways to reach that goal is to increase the number of bikers. Thus I am very pleased to welcome the world's cyclist community to Copenhagen. This is an outstanding opportunity to exchange experiences and ideas," said Bo Asmus Kjeldgaard, Mayor, Technical and Environmental Administration, City of Copenhagen.
"Cycling is a crucial test of our collective will to act to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to demonstrate that reduction equals a better quality of life and a healthier population. Switching from cars to bikes brings an immediate climate change gain and signals that lifestyles and thinking have finally got the climate change message. There are no technical, financial or logistic issues in this transport transformation; the only thing missing is the will to act, and the time to act is now," said John Whitelegg, Professor of Sustainable Transport and Development at the Liverpool John Moores University.
