UK Study Shows Men vs. Women Eco Driving Practices

A recent study perfected in the UK shows that six in ten men would use their cars in fewer occasions in order to cut motoring costs, but less than 50 percent of women would be willing to do the same. The survey, perfected by the Environmental Transport Association (ETA), revealed that 45 percent of men would adopt a more efficient driving style in order to cut fuel bills, but only 37 percent of women would drive more slowly to save money.

However, women are 23 percent more likely to combine car trips in order to reduce overall mileage. This practice, which is also known as “travel blending” is one of the most effective ways to reduce a vehicle’s carbon footprint.

The research has been published to coincide with the UK’s Green Transport Week, which runs between June 13 and June 20.

The study also showed that twice as many men as women are prepared to cycle in order to reduce motoring costs (21 percent and 10 percent respectively), with cycling being twice as likely to be adopted by young drivers aged 18-24 than by those aged 45-54.

In addition to that, the survey showed that 35 percent more men would use public transport more often to cut motoring costs (38 percent of men compared to 28 percent of women).

"Since women do fewer miles and are far more likely to keep to the speed limit than men, arguably they are the greener drivers, but everyone can enjoy financial and environmental benefits by occasionally leaving the car at home," said Andrew Davis, Director at the Environmental Transport Association.
