The latest creation from BMW, unveiled today, is the 4 Series Gran Coupe. This new model is going to fit right between the 3 Series Sedan and the 3 Series GT, even though it comes from the 4 Series range. A bit hard to understand, I know, but try to stick with me here.

The new model will be available with 5 engines when it hits dealerships worldwide on June 21. The entry level petrol model will be the 420i, fitted with a 2-liter turbocharged unit making 184 HP and 270 Nm (200 lb-ft) of torque that allows the 1,480 kg car to reach 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 7.5 seconds (7.6 for the automatic), 0.2 seconds slower than the Coupe model. Combined fuel consumption is rated at 6.4 l/100 km (6.1 for the auto) or 36.7 mpg.

The 428i will be using the same 2-liter engine but this time rated at 245 HP and 350 Nm of torque, sending the Gran Coupe to 100 km/h (62 mph) from a standstill in 6.1 seconds (6 seconds for the automatic) and returning an average fuel consumption of 6.6 l/100 km (35.6 mpg) for the manual and 6.3 l/100 km (37.3 mpg) for the automatic gearbox.

The last petrol option is the 435i model, fitted with the classic 3-liter turbocharged unit making 306 HP and 400 Nm (300 lb-ft) of torque that’s capable of a 5.5 second run to 100 km/h (62 mph), 0.3 seconds faster when fitted with the automatic gearbox. The average fuel consumption of this model is currently rated at 8.1 l/100 km (29 mpg) for the manual and 7.5 l/100 km (31.3 mpg) for the automatic.

Two diesels will also join the range, the 418d being the entry level model, with a 2-liter turbo diesel engine making 143 HP and 320 Nm of torque that returns, on average, 52.2 mpg (4.5 l/100 km) and goes from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 9.2 seconds (9.1 with the auto).

The 420d is even faster with a sprint that takes only 7.7 seconds (7.5 with the auto) and returns an average fuel consumption of 4.7 l/100 km (50 mpg) for the manual and 4.6 l/100 km (51.1 mpg) for the automatic 8-speed Steptronic gearbox.

Only 2 models will also get xDrive from the get go. I’m talking about the 420d and the 428i models. The petrol model will be faster than its RWD brother by 0.3 seconds with the manual and will return a fuel consumption of 34.5 mpg. The diesel AWD model however is exactly as fast as the RWD model, both in manual and automatic guises. The fuel consumption, on the other hand, is a bit less frugal, returning a combined level of 4.9 l/100 km (48 mpg).

All we have to do now is wait for the M4 Gran Coupe. Since all the 4-door versions are 0.2 seconds slower than their 2-door brothers, expect the same for the M4.
