French automaker Citroen will be entering the compact crossover class from 2014, with a new DS derived model, called the DSX.
In fact, the Citroen DS sub-brand will expand with three new models by the end of that year, the DSX SUV actually being a Chinese-built rival for the already established BMW X3 and Audi Q5.
Judging by the lastest rendering, the DSX is a good looking car, and its new chromed trapezoidal grill sets it apart from other DS models. The bad news is that the new SUV is aimed at the Chinese market and it might take a while to see it somewhere else.
Being built in China also means Citroen will use existing platforms for the DSX, and not the new EMP2 technology. This probably means we’re talking about the same “Project Global” platform that’s been used for the 2010 Mitsubishi ASX, the 2012 Citroen C4 Aircross, and the 2012 Peugeot 4008.
Speaking of C4 Aircross there’s one thing that comes to mind. Why the need for a similar offering in DS clothes? Well, the answer is very simple: destined to be an actual premium sub-brand, the DS will add a luxurious feel to the car destined to challenge BMW and Audi in the compact crossover segment.
It remains to be seen if this challenge is worthy of attention considering it will start on Chinese land.
