Chrysler Workers Afraid of Marchionne Restructuring

With Marchionne now serving as CEO of the new Chrysler, employees working for the former bankrupt automaker are afraid that the Italian might discontinue some models or come with a restructuring plan that could lead to new job layoffs. According to the Detroit Free Press, the first to issue concerns over a potential job cut were the workers at a Jeep factory in Toledo who said that the Italian management could kill one of two models they produce.

It appears that Sergio Marchionne demanded US executives to propose new model cuts in order to reduce the overall number of vehicles produced by Chrysler and sell only one type of vehicle under one of the owned brands. This time, Marchionne aims to lower the overall number of models and remove rebadged versions, previously sold as Chrysler, Dodge and even Jeep, from reaching the US market.

The Italian hasn't commented on the plans so far but the aforementioned source says that new details are expected to be released before or during the Frankfurt Auto Show next month.

Back in June when he was officially appointed Chrysler CEO, Sergio Marchionne assured Chrysler employees that he won't impose too many job cuts, emphasizing that the strategic alliance is more about bringing technology used by the Italian company to be used in the United States.

"Over the next several months, we will begin the process of transferring Fiat's technology, platforms and powertrains for small- and medium-sized cars into Chrysler's manufacturing facilities. This award-winning technology will be critical to helping Chrysler round out its product line and give the company a strategic advantage in many markets around the world,"
Marchionne said in a latter submitted to Chrysler's employees back in June.

"Work is already underway to develop new environmentally friendly, fuel-efficient, high-quality vehicles, including Chrysler's electric-vehicle program. In the meantime, we will begin working together to find the most effective ways to combine our R&D and distribution networks so that we can begin to reap the many benefits this alliance will provide."
