It seems that all automakers have gone gear-crazy! A few years ago, the seven-speed autobox seemed so crazy - now we have a seven-speed manual. Then came BMW with the eight-speed automatic gearbox which it now fits to pretty much every model in the range, with excellent results.
However, Chrysler will be getting their very own eight-cog autobox, which they will start fitting to their cars, later this year. Apparently, these ZF-made gearboxes will boost fuel efficiency by up to 15%. Also, Chrysler will be adding one more gear in coming years, and the gears craze will probably end with nine.
Chrysler (and Fiat) seem to be aiming to meet the increasingly strict CAFE regulations by investing in the development of technology that is already available, instead of hybrid systems which are far more complex to develop from scratch, whereas internal combustion engines have been around for more than a century and are far easier (and cheaper) to develop further.
