Announced for the first time as a glorious 1,000 HP hypercar back in 2013 at the Shanghai Auto Show, the Icona Vulcano has been rather unknown until recently. Not it is aiming to make it back into the spotlight with a reveal at Pebble Beach this weekend.
Compared to what the company claimed initially, the specs of the car that will reach Pebble Beach are rather modest. The 1,000 HP monster under the bonnet was replaced by a 670 HP big-block V8 that’s nowhere close that what supposed to be. However, the hypercar also brags with a titanium body which should be interesting to see at work.

According to the Chinese, the Volcano that will be presented in the US will have even better specs and a design that was inspired by the Blackbird SR-71 plane. Yes, the fastest plane in the world.

To make this thing come true, the owners went to French designers and used Italian engineers, not exactly the best combination possible in the auto world. However, Chinese money can buy anything these days so this is what they came up with, a car that seems to be true to its ‘roots’ if we’re to judge it by its front fascia.

Samuel Chuffart is the Icona Design Director and he went with titanium and carbon fiber for the body of the car that is still a one-off at this point.

Another key name in the development of this hypercar was Claudio Lombardi, the former Ferrari director that was behind the powertrain development of various championship winning cars. He’s actually the one that caught our attention while reading about the Vulcano. He was joined by Mario Cavagnero with who he tried out some Lancia projects.

To go into further detail about the technical side of things, we should also mention that the V8 under the bonnet is supercharged and comes from a Corvette ZR1. The maximum output is rated at 670 HP and 620 lb-ft (840 Nm) of torque and, while shy of the 1,000 HP promised, they allow the Vulcano to reach 60 mph in 2.8 seconds. The top speed is claimed to be 220 mph (352 km/h).

The car can seemingly be purchased by interested parties and the engine can be pushed to make closer to the mentioned benchmark horsepower count if you so wish it. There’s a hefty price to pay though, so high that it’s secret at the moment.
