Chevrolet has a new reason to be proud. Its all-new 2016 Malibu Hybrid achieved an EPA-estimated fuel economy rating of 46 MPG in the combined cycle. The value is the best in the segment, a significant achievement.
The detailed estimates by the EPA for the 2016 Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid are 47 MPG for city driving, 46 MPG for Highway driving, and 46 MPG combined rating. Except for the highway rating, the Malibu Hybrid exceeds the EPA-estimated ratings of all the other hybrid sedans on the US market today.
In the highway estimate, the Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid is below the Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid by two MPG, according to Chevrolet’s press release.
In the US, the Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid starts at $28,645 including destination charge. The hybrid version of the Malibu has an extended wheelbase for enhanced comfort and space, but is also 300 pounds lighter (136 kg) than its predecessor.
The Malibu Hybrid is fitted with a 1.8-liter direct-injected gasoline engine that is mated to an electric unit. The latter is borrowed from the 2016 Chevrolet Volt. Together, the two motors provide a total system power of 182 HP (136 kW).
The battery is a lithium-ion unit with 80 cells. It develops 1.5 kWh and can power the Malibu Hybrid at speeds of up to 53 MPH (85 km/h) in the electric mode. The gasoline engine is activated at high loads and at higher speeds to assist the electric unit. Just like the 2016 Volt, the Malibu Hybrid has a blended regenerative braking system, which charges the battery in the early stages of braking.
The Malibu Hybrid's Internal Combustion Engine comes with the Exhaust Gas Heat Recovery technology. It uses the heat generated from the combustion process to warm both the engine and the cabin.
Since the exhaust headers get hot quickly after start-up, engineers have figured out a way to channel the heat towards bringing the internal combustion engine to its best operating temperature faster. The Exhaust Gas Recirculation system is still operational, and it is also used to improve fuel economy.
Concerning safety, the new Malibu Hybrid comes with ten airbags as standard, along with cruise control, and a rear-view camera. The Chevrolet MyLink multimedia unit is also standard, and it comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility.
Customers who want to let a teen driver behind the wheel and monitor their driving habits can opt for the Teen Driver system. The latter includes limits on radio volume, top speed, and an in-vehicle report card to show how the teen driver behaved while they were using the Malibu Hybrid. The in-vehicle report card is an industry first, Chevrolet claims.
