Carmakers' World Cup Sales Finals

Unaware that football mixes better with beer and Coke than with vehicles, German carmakers are scrambling, in light of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, to win an unofficial competition: seller of the most vehicles.

There are exactly five days left until the opening game between South Africa and Mexico in Johannesburg, and the manufacturers are throwing everything they've got into making the most of the month-full of pure football.

Mercedes Benz is throwing in what Autonews calls the most extensive promotion in 20 years, with discounts reaching as much as 2,050 euros ($2,493) for the SLK. Should Germany prevail on the pitch, a special leasing offer pays as much as 319 euros. Also, zero-percent financing under the “dream selection” program is being offered for A,-, B- Klasse and the GLK.

Volkswagen is offering discounts on the Golf, Polo, Tiguan and Scirocco models, as well as shaded windows, new seat fabrics and parallel parking guidance. For customers opting for anti-theft alarm systems and alloy wheels, an 2,600 euro customer gain is being offered.

BMW on the other hand takes a more cautious approach and decided to pretty much stay out of the game. Their only World Cup-related presence on the market will be as official car, as it will offer 7 Series and X5 models to shuttle heads of states.

“Football is a classless, ageless sport in Germany,” Willi Diez, head Institute for Automobile Industry explained the reasons why carmakers try to take full advantage of the World Cup. “It speaks to a broad audience.”
