Accidents do happen. We are only human. All that matters is that everyone walks away unharmed. It happened with this driver right here. She drove her Subaru Forester straight into the trash compactor.
The incident took place in a small town in Massachusetts, where not much ever happens. But this is now making headlines worldwide, turning the 10,000-inhabitant place into an international sensation.

The surveillance footage released by the Southborough Department of Public Works shows the car turning left in a parking lot located near a transfer station. So far, so good. The driver seems to be intending to park the silver Subaru Forester right next to another car.

But the Subaru does not stop where it is supposed to. It just breaks the protection chain in front, goes over the kerb, and plunges head-first into the trash compactor. The vehicle just stands there, nose down, rear end up, with the rear wheels still spinning for a few seconds after the fall.

The female driver of the other car, who had just thrown trash into the compactor and planned to get behind the steering wheel, is seen covering her face with her hands in shock. Employees from the Department of Public Works saw the incident and immediately alerted the emergency services, as reported by Fire Chief Steven Achilles.

Luckily, the compactor was not active at the moment of the accident. According to the Southborough Fire Department, a woman was rescued after her car dropped into the compactor. The firefighters climbed down into the compression device using ladders to check on the driver. It took around 20 minutes to get her out.

She was taken to hospital with minor injuries. She was eventually released from the hospital later that evening.

According to the authorities, it wasn’t immediately clear how the car ended up in the compactor. But the female driver must have reportedly confused the throttle with the brake pedal and, instead of a parking maneuver, she did a… plunging maneuver. Authorities are still investigating the crash. It’s a dirty job, but somebody’s got to do it.

The photos that the Southborough Fire Department posted on Facebook sparked amusement among the users. “Hey, I have a truck I need to get rid of, can I drive mine in there?” Michael asks.

“Don’t they know where scrap metal goes?” someone else jokes when seeing the video of the incident. And the “Sorry, you can’t park here!” reply is always appropriate in such cases.

While jokes can be funny, since no one was harmed, there are people who willingly throw their cars into trash compactors. Like the Lamborghini Gallardo that ended up in the world’s largest shredder.a

And other times, police do it themselves with vehicles confiscated for illegal driving like it happened in France last summer. Two BMWs were compacted by the French National Police. Drivers complained back then that they did not even have time to defend themselves and save their cars.
