You can get an idea about how big of a thing the CT6-V is for Cadillac dealers if you take a look at the hashtags from a September 2019 post by Cadillac of Norwood. More to the point, the person in charge of the dealer’s Facebook page used #V8 and #supercharged even though the Blackwing engine is built with pride in Kentucky with a twin-turbo setup.
What comes as even more surprising is that the first examples of the breed – built for the 2019 model year – are now arriving at dealerships after a notable delay. Cadillac Society mentions emissions-related issues, but nevertheless, September 2019 is a year and a half since General Motors announced the CT6-V in March 2018 as the CT6 V-Sport. Yup, a long wait…
The name was changed in September 2018 even though the CT6-V is nowhere near the performance figures of the CTS-V, which used to feature the supercharged small-block V8 from the Chevrolet Corvette Z06. The order books opened in January 2019, with an initial run of 275 units.
Then Cadillac slapped a $4,000 increase to the retail price, meaning that the second installment starts at $92,790. As if that wasn’t enough of a confusion, General Motors added a bit more to the mix with the 2020 model year Platinum with the 500-hp version of the Blackwing V8. This trim level sits above the CT6–V, retailing at $97,490 excluding freight.
As for the most infuriating thing about the CT6 and Cadillac, production of the full-size luxury sedan at the Detroit-Hamtramck plant will come to a grinding halt next year. That says a lot about what General Motors thinks about the crown jewel of the group, let alone the people who spend their hard-earned cash on a lesser alternative to the ever-popular German triad.
On the upside, it’s worth remembering that the know-how of the Blackwing will be used to twin-turbo the next Corvette Z06. Rumors suggest the C8 will level up to approximately 800 horsepower, and the LT5 engine is further expected with close to 700 pound-feet of torque.
