BYD, World's No. 1 Carmaker by 2025

We already know that Chinese carmakers are extremely ambitious and no matter what, they are aiming to fight head to head with global companies. But BYD Co, also known as China's largest rechargeable battery producer, wants to become the largest carmaker in the world by 2015, which means it has to overtake Toyota in new car sales in 15 years.

Furthermore, a more realistic plan is to become the number one automaker in China by 2015 which, at the first glance, sounds like a more possible scenario as compared to the one mentioned above.

"We have plenty of time to become China's top carmaker by 2015 with a complete and mature product line-up. I am sure we can achieve the target earlier than scheduled," Wang Jianjun, deputy general manager of BYD Auto Sales Co told the China Daily. "BYD was also making efforts to overtake Toyota to become the world's No 1 carmaker in 2025, with annual sales of over 10 million cars expected by that time," Wang said.

To give you an idea on how ambitious BYD's plans are, here are some sales figures revealed by the company this year. BYD sold 246,881 cars in the first eight months of the year and aims to sell approximately 400,000 cars this year. For the sake of comparison, Toyota, who is currently the world's number 1 automaker, sold a total of 9 million cars last year while General Motors, the company that help the first position for many years, delivered "only" 8.4 million.

Nevertheless, BYD still hopes to sell more than 10 million units per year by 2025...
