UK-based folding bike specialist Brompton has set out on a mission to convince outdoor enthusiasts that its easy-fold bikes are a good fit not just for city commutes but also for spur-of-the-moment adventures. To do this, they teamed up with Bear Grylls, the man whose name is synonymous with adventure and fearless exploration.
Compact, versatile, and easy to transport, folding bikes have proved their utility in the city, where traffic can be infuriating and looking for a parking spot is like searching for a needle in the haystack. Not only do this kind of bikes help commuters get where they need to go, but they are also welcome in trains, buses, and ferries and fit neatly in car trunks and taxis.
But when considering going on adventures in a more rugged environment, a folding bike is not the first thing that comes to mind. Inspired by the endless adventures of Bear Grylls and his fearless personality, the British bike manufacturer has created the Brompton x Bear Grylls Explore Bike, which they promote as the ultimate companion for those keen on adventure and exploration.
Built with a focus on versatility and comfort, the new limited-edition folding bike is based on Brompton's C Line Explore, and just like previous models in the range, it folds down in just 20 seconds, making it incredibly convenient for storage and transport. It tips the scales at 26.9 pounds (12.2 kg) and boasts a hand-brazed steel frame, a mid-rise handlebar that adds style and comfort to your ride, and a two-tone wheelset (silver and black rims).
More importantly, it comes with a host of features that make it a good fit for outdoor enthusiasts. It is equipped with six speeds, a comfortable Brooks C17 all-weather saddle, and Schwalbe Marathon Racer Tanwall tires. Do not expect to be able to head into dirt tracks with large rocks and holes riding this bike. This is a task for more capable folding mountain bikes. However, the super puncture-resistant folding tires ensure the Grylls-inspired bike is ready to conquer light gravel tracks, grass, cobblestones, and sand.
