General Motors, usually a 'sleeping giant' type of automaker, was curiously active this summer. For example, Cadillac just unleashed in New York City's Times Square the first-ever, all-electric Escalade IQ with Ultium technology.
Chevrolet, meanwhile, was even feistier. This month they showcased the 2024 Chevrolet Blazer EV with the Police Pursuit Package, promising this will be a silent, fast, and ready-for-any-action all-electric crossover SUV. Also, last month, the company announced its popular Bolt series, dubbed 'America's most affordable EV,' will return in new-gen form to Chevy's growing all-electric lineup.
As such, one might notice that GM is pushing the pedal to the metal with electrics – and they are still indebted to fans to unleash the mighty 2024 Chevy Silverado EV and GMC Sierra EV upon the US market and do battle with Rivian, Ford, Ram, and Tesla's Cybertruck. Also, we have to point out an obvious fact – GM has an issue with its Ultium technology: it only underpins the giants.
Meanwhile, all the lightweight fellas – like the Buick Electra E4, Cadillac Lyriq, Honda Prologue, and the Chevy Equinox EV and Blazer EV siblings – rely on the GM BEV3 platform to make them tick. Oddly enough, the company hasn't found the middle EV ground just yet. Or have they, but they're not letting anyone know officially?
Just recently, GM Design Center's social media page gave us another enticing Chevy idea - this time, a sporty all-electric SUV with three doors and modern styling. Unlike past Chevy EV ideation sketches – which depicted a possible two-door sports car (Camaro anyone) and an epic two-door Ute (Camaro El Camino, of course), this one goes into full off-road territory.
Penned by lady designer Darby (who also happens to be a drift S13 with LS3 and time attack MX-5 Miata owner), this "dynamic and sporty" yet totally rugged all-electric Chevrolet SUV is a three-door model, unlike anything that exists currently in the brand's lineup. It has massive ride height, extra-small overhangs, huge beadlock-type wheels shod in chunky all-terrain tires, and the general allure of something that would look ultra-cool on America's fabled trails.
Logic dictated fans would immediately ask to be made as a proper, modern EV successor of the beloved Chevrolet K5 Blazer in response to the popularity of the two-door Ford Bronco and Jeep Wrangler. But, of course, GM will probably never bring something like that into the real world.
Although, it would be reasonably easy for them to do so – just use the darn Ultium technology on something smaller and nimbler that doesn't weigh a gazillion pounds like the GMC Hummer EV pickup truck and SUV, or the new Caddy Escalade IQ! Sheesh, I wonder how hard it is for them to understand all the signs from enthusiasts asking for the K5 Blazer to come back in one form or the other?!
