The turbocharger has been modified by BorgWarner and GM engineers to save weight and deliver faster response. Thanks to the unit, the Excelle engine provides 181 hp and 235 Nm of torque between 1,980 and 5,400 rpm. Thanks to a superboost function the torque can be increased to 266 Nm torque. At the same time, fuel consumption is being kept at around 30 mpg (7.8l/100 km).
"China is participating in the global trend towards downsized turbocharged gasoline engines, making vehicles more fuel-efficient, more eco-friendly and more powerful," Roger Wood, BorgWarner vice president said in a statement.
"We believe our leadership in all aspects of turbocharging technology will help drive further growth in the Chinese auto industry and are proud to provide local production capabilities for OEMs in China."
The turbochargers will be manufactured by BorgWarner in Ningbo, China, at a facility operated by the supplier ever since 2004.
For the first half of the year, American manufacturer GM's Chinese market surpassed, for the first time, the one in the US. Most of the vehicles sold here were manufactured by the GM- Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (SAIC) joint venture, or GM Shanghai.
Earlier this week, GM also announced it has started working on the advanced Technical Center in Shanghai, a facility which will be in charge of developing advanced vehicle designs and technologies for the manufacturer's global operations.
